The first useful question is not "What are the specks?" It is "Where do they appear?" Black particles can come from a faucet part, a flexible connector, a filter, or plumbing farther upstream. Color alone cannot identify the material or tell you whether the water is safe to drink.
Pause normal use when the change is unexplained
Do not drink or cook with visibly contaminated water until you have checked current guidance from your water provider or another qualified source. Stop sooner if the water also has an unusual odor, oily film, widespread discoloration, or particles in both hot and cold water. Do not open the heater, remove hoses, drain the tank, or add chemicals as a test.
Run a hot-versus-cold tap check
Use clean, clear glasses. Remove no plumbing parts other than a faucet aerator that the fixture manual treats as homeowner-removable. Fill one glass from the cold side and one from the hot side at the same faucet. Repeat at a second sink, preferably one on another floor or away from the water heater.
Set the glasses on white paper and let them stand for ten minutes. Photograph the particles, label each sample with the tap and temperature, and note whether the specks float, sink, stay hard, or break apart. Do not rub unknown particles between bare fingers.
Check the easy-to-document sources
Faucet aerator
If the aerator is meant to be removed by the homeowner, place a towel in the sink, remove it according to the fixture instructions, and photograph anything trapped in the screen. Test the water once with the aerator off. Specks trapped at one fixture point toward a local source, but the aerator still does not prove what the material is.
Water filters
Granular activated carbon can resemble hard, similarly sized coffee grounds. Check under-sink, refrigerator, faucet, and whole-home filters for installation dates, damaged cartridges, overdue replacement, or recent service. Follow the exact filter manual rather than flushing for an improvised amount of time.
Flexible connectors
Flexible braided hoses may have a dark inner liner. The Springfield Utility Board notes that a degrading faucet, washing-machine, or water-heater hose can release small black particles. Photograph visible connectors and their labels, but do not squeeze, bend, disconnect, or tighten an old hose. Disturbing a weak connector can turn a particle complaint into a leak.
What not to conclude from the particles
- Black specks do not automatically mean the water-heater tank has rusted through.
- Particles that look like carbon may still come from another dark material.
- A clear cold sample at one sink does not rule out a broader issue elsewhere in the home.
- Appearance cannot establish drinking-water safety or identify bacteria, metals, or chemicals.
If particles remain unexplained, ask the water provider whether there is current main work, flushing, a service interruption, or a water-quality notice for your address. Your annual Consumer Confidence Report is useful background, but it may not explain a sudden household plumbing problem.
When to request professional help
- The specks appear at several hot taps but not on the cold side.
- A flexible water-heater connector looks swollen, cracked, wet, kinked, or corroded.
- The water heater is leaking, making a new sound, producing discolored water, or losing hot-water capacity.
- The particles return after a model-approved filter replacement or faucet cleaning.
- You cannot isolate the issue to one fixture without opening plumbing or heater components.
Homes in Salt Lake City, Sandy, Draper, West Jordan, Provo, Orem, Lehi, and American Fork may have different water providers and different treatment systems. Use the provider listed on your water bill, not a county-wide assumption.
Build a useful service packet
Send photos of the hot and cold samples on white paper, a list of affected fixtures, the date the problem began, filter models and replacement dates, and clear photos of visible supply connectors. Add the water-heater model and serial label if you can reach it without moving equipment or touching hot, wet, gas, or electrical parts.
