The shower starts hot, then fades to lukewarm much sooner than it used to. An hour later, there is another small batch of hot water. That pattern can fit an electric tank with a heating problem, but it does not prove that an element has failed. Tank size, thermostat controls, sediment, wiring, a plumbing crossover, and unusually heavy use can produce similar complaints.
Keep the access panels closed
A standard electric tank is commonly connected to a 240-volt circuit. Do not remove an access cover, touch wiring, test an element, drain the tank, or repeatedly reset a breaker unless you are qualified and following the exact manufacturer instructions. Water near electrical parts, a hot-plastic smell, arcing, smoke, or a breaker that trips again calls for prompt professional help.
What the hot-water pattern can tell you
Most standard residential electric tanks use one or two immersion elements. A.O. Smith's homeowner overview explains that these elements heat the water stored in the tank. Many two-element models heat the upper portion first and then switch to the lower portion, but controls vary. Heat-pump, smart, point-of-use, and simultaneous-element models may behave differently. The model's wiring diagram and service manual decide what applies to your heater.
A safe test that does not involve a screwdriver
Pick a time when nobody needs hot water and no dishwasher or washer is running. Keep the heater at its normal setting. Do not raise the temperature to force a better result.
- Start after a full recovery period. If the heater has been used recently, wait the recovery time listed in the manual or on the product information.
- Test more than one fixture. If one shower runs cold but nearby sinks stay hot, the shower valve or cartridge may be involved.
- Time the change. Note when the water becomes warm and when it becomes cold. "About six minutes" is more useful than "not very long."
- Wait and repeat once. Record how long it takes before useful hot water returns. Stop if a breaker trips, water appears near wiring, or you smell hot insulation or plastic.
- Photograph the label. Capture the model, serial number, tank capacity, voltage, and wattage from the outside label without removing a panel.
A qualified technician can use that pattern with electrical measurements to separate a failed element from a thermostat, high-limit switch, loose connection, supply-voltage problem, or plumbing issue.
Why a Utah winter changes the result
Water entering a Wasatch Front home can be colder in winter. The heater must add more heat to bring that water to the same stored temperature, so recovery can take longer and the usable hot-water mix may feel smaller. A marginal problem often becomes easier to notice during a cold spell in Salt Lake County or Utah County.

Do not dry-fire a replacement element
An electric element can be damaged if power reaches it while it is not submerged. A.O. Smith describes dry-fire protection on some models because an empty or partly filled tank can burn out an upper element. This is one reason element replacement, tank draining, refilling, and electrical testing should follow the exact model manual and are usually better left to a qualified plumber or electrician.
If the trouble began immediately after installation, draining, plumbing work, or a long water shutoff, include that detail in the service request. Do not energize a tank that may not be full.
Repair or replacement?
An isolated element or thermostat repair may make sense when the tank is otherwise sound and parts are available. Ask for a replacement comparison when the tank is leaking, badly corroded, outside its warranty, or old enough that another major repair would be hard to justify. The model and serial number can help establish age and warranty status before the visit.

- Any leak, sound, odor, recent outage, draining, or plumbing work.
