You turn on the shower and watch perfectly good water run cold down the drain. Then the bathroom sink warms up quickly, while the kitchen at the far end of the house takes much longer. That pattern matters. A long wait often starts in the piping between the heater and the tap, not inside the water heater.
Keep the first check simple and safe

Why the far bathroom makes you wait
Hot water does not appear at the tap the instant the heater fires. The cooled water sitting in the branch line has to leave first. A longer or wider pipe holds more water, and a low-flow fixture takes longer to move that water. Poorly insulated piping can cool faster between uses, especially where lines pass through a cold garage, crawlspace, or exterior-adjacent cavity.

A hot-water recirculation system moves hot water closer to fixtures so the wait can be shorter. Some homes have a dedicated return pipe. Others use a retrofit crossover valve under a sink. Controls vary: a timer, wall button, motion sensor, temperature control, or app may tell the pump when to run.
If the home used to deliver hot water quickly and recently slowed down, look for a labeled pump near the heater and any control that may have lost power or its schedule. Take photos of the pump label and controls. Do not assume the pump should run all day. Continuous circulation can waste heat through the piping, and a bad setup can warm the cold-water line or add needless energy use. Ask a plumber about demand-controlled or properly scheduled operation for your household.
