A sharp bang right when a faucet, washing machine, or dishwasher stops drawing water is often water hammer. Moving water stops quickly, a pressure wave travels through the plumbing, and a pipe or fitting may jump. The sound can carry through framing, so a bang beside the water heater does not prove the heater caused it.
Stop the test if you find a safety problem
Do not keep cycling a fixture if a pipe moves hard, a fitting starts leaking, the relief line discharges, or water reaches electrical equipment. Leave gas controls, electrical covers, pressure-reducing valves, expansion tanks, and hidden piping to a qualified plumber or other appropriate professional.
First, listen for the timing
Run one fixture at a time, then close it normally. You are trying to identify the event that triggers the noise, not make the bang louder.
A safe room-by-room check
- Start with the fastest-closing equipment. Washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerator ice makers, and some single-handle faucets can stop flow abruptly.
- Compare hot and cold. Note whether the bang happens on the hot side, cold side, or both. A washing machine may use both lines.
- Try a normal hand-operated faucet. Close it gently, then at your usual speed. If only a quick closure triggers the bang, tell the plumber.
- Stand back and watch exposed piping. Look from the floor. Do not grab a moving or hot pipe. Record visible movement near the heater, laundry connections, or unfinished-basement ceiling.
- Check for fresh evidence afterward. Look for drips, new staining, wet insulation, or water in the heater pan.
Save a ten-second video that captures the fixture and sound together. A plumber can do more with "the hot laundry valve bangs when the washer stops filling" than with "something bangs in the basement."
Why the water heater may seem involved
The heater sits on the home's hot-water piping, and its utility-room connections are often exposed. That makes noise and movement easier to notice there. It can also be close to a pressure-reducing valve, check valve, backflow device, or expansion tank that affects the plumbing system.
Water hammer and thermal expansion are different. Water hammer is a short pressure shock after flow changes quickly. Thermal expansion happens when stored water heats and its volume increases. In a closed plumbing system, that extra volume can raise pressure. Either problem can show up near the heater, but the correct fix depends on pressure readings, the plumbing layout, and the condition and sizing of installed controls.
Do not buy an arrestor before finding the source
A listed water-hammer arrestor can absorb pressure shock when it is correctly sized and installed near the source. It is not a cure for every pipe noise. A loose pipe may need proper support. High or unstable house pressure may involve the pressure-reducing valve. A closed system may need a correctly sized and charged potable-water expansion tank. Sometimes more than one issue is present.
A plumber should check static and flowing pressure, reproduce the noise, identify quick-closing valves, inspect visible supports, and review any pressure regulator, backflow device, expansion tank, and relief-valve discharge. Ask for the diagnosis and proposed device location in writing.

• Fixture or appliance that triggers it
• Hot, cold, or both lines
• One bang or repeated knocking
• Time the noise began
• Recent plumbing or utility work
• Leaks, pipe movement, or relief discharge
When to treat the bang as urgent
Request prompt help if the noise started after a water-heater replacement, pressure-regulator change, backflow work, or utility service work; if exposed pipes jump hard; or if you see a leak or relief-valve discharge. Shut down the situation safely and seek emergency help if there is flooding, water near energized equipment, a gas odor, smoke, or a carbon monoxide alarm.
