Two homes can share a ZIP code and sit at noticeably different elevations. That matters when you replace a natural-gas or propane water heater because gas appliances are certified for stated operating conditions. Some current models handle a broad altitude range without a hardware change. Others call for a model-specific setting, kit, input adjustment, or different sizing calculation. The rating plate and manual settle the question, not a rule of thumb from the internet.
Do not tune a gas appliance yourself
Do not change burner orifices, manifold pressure, gas valves, fuel settings, vent parts, combustion-air openings, or installer-menu altitude settings. Incorrect gas input or venting can create fire, explosion, and carbon monoxide hazards. If you smell gas, hear hissing, see soot, feel ill, or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the building and call 911 or the gas utility from outside.
Why altitude comes up in a replacement quote
Air becomes less dense as elevation rises. A fuel-burning appliance still needs the right relationship between fuel, combustion air, exhaust flow, and rated input. The manufacturer tests and lists each model for specific conditions, then puts the allowed installation range and any required procedure in its documentation.
This is also a capacity question. A manufacturer may require reduced input at higher elevations, which can reduce heat output. That may change recovery time for a storage tank or the temperature rise and flow available from a tankless unit. A replacement should be sized for the actual house and installation elevation rather than copied from the old tank label.

What to look for in the manual
Search the exact-model manual for “altitude,” “elevation,” “derate,” “input,” and “gas pressure.” Read the whole section, including footnotes. One A. O. Smith commercial manual, for example, certifies the covered models without modification up to a stated elevation and warns that output falls when input is reduced at high altitude. That is useful evidence of why model instructions matter, but its limit does not transfer to a different residential heater.
For a tankless unit, the procedure may be an installer configuration rather than a physical part. That still belongs to a trained installer. Ask for the final setting and commissioning results in writing so a future technician does not have to reconstruct the installation.
Questions to put on every gas replacement quote
- What exact model number are you proposing, and is it listed for this installation elevation?
- Does its manual require an altitude setting, different part, input change, or no change at this address?
- Will altitude reduce storage-tank recovery or tankless flow at the temperature rise this home needs?
- How will you confirm gas type, supply pressure, pipe capacity, venting, combustion air, and appliance input?
- Does the existing vent system match the new model, or is vent work included in the quote?
- Who obtains the permit, and what inspection applies in the city or county with jurisdiction?
- What startup or commissioning record will I receive after installation?

Warning signs after installation
A new gas heater should not leave soot, scorch marks, persistent exhaust odor, repeated ignition faults, unexplained shutdowns, or a carbon monoxide alarm. A lazy-looking or unusual flame is not a homeowner adjustment project. Stop using the appliance when the manual directs, keep people away from the area, and call the installer or gas utility as appropriate.
